In July 2012, the DGIST-LBNL Research Center for Emerging Materials was established based on the collaboration between DGIST and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in the United States. In December 2012, the center was selected for the "Overseas Excellence Research Institution Attraction Project" by the Korea Research Foundation. Subsequently, in May 2014, a subunit within LBNL (LDJIM) was established to facilitate joint research endeavors.
The DGIST-LBNL Research Center for Emerging Materials aims to contribute to the local, national, and global communities by commercializing fundamental new technologies and transferring them to local industries through additional support from the city of Daegu and Dalseong-gun, as well as through international collaborative research efforts.
Furthermore, the center conducts advanced research on novel material properties by integrating DGIST's capabilities in material synthesis with LBNL's atomic-level analysis technologies utilizing the synchrotron-based soft X-ray microscopy facility. Through active personnel exchanges with LBNL, the center will solidify its forward-looking partnership for the future.
