'STAR Library' : Library Portal System of Four Institutes of Science and Technology in Korea
‘STAR Library(http://starlibrary.org)*,’ which was developed from the collaboration of four institutes of science and technology; Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology(DGIST), Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology(KAIST), Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology(GIST), and Ulsan Institute of Science and Technology(UNIST), will now be offering objective, verified and integrative searches of researchers, labs, and their latest achievements.
Since 2019, the four institutes of science and technology has been offering over 200,000 pieces of information through ‘STAR Library’ portal, including more than 100,000 journals, 15,000 patents, and 60,000 academic activities. This fall, the portal has been improved its searching capability, enabling an integrated search and utilization of information on 1,170 researchers (full-time faculty) and 752 labs of the four institutes.
The improvement is expected to help students who wish to study at graduate school, domestic and foreign researchers seeking for research collaboration as well as companies and local community members looking for information on the experts of the institutes of science and technology. ‘STAR Library’ will also provides information on the latest research trends, including domestic and foreign research projects, while also allowing users to make a general search of materials available at the four institutes.
It was a long journey to make STAR Library equipped with such integrative search capability. Starting from the MOU between the libraries of the institutes of science and technology in 2014, KAIST standardized and shared its Researcher Information Management System(RIMS) and further expanded the system to the three other institutes. Also, the presidents of the four institutes signed the ‘MOU for shared use of academic and research information’ in the beginning of 2020, establishing a basis for broader service.
With such efforts, the four institutes of science and technology have developed an integrated portal system and are now ready to operate for sharing essential information and experience, including academic and research achievements of the universities specializing in science and technology. Such achievement have already received high praise for establishing a cornerstone for future-oriented academic and research information services and also for comprehensive information sharing to create synergy effects in research collaboration.
Ji Hwan Choi, the head of the Office of Information and Library Services at DGIST, emphasized, “We will continue to publicize the library inside and outside of the school, and also to improve the system and data management.” “The new ‘STAR Library’ will become a useful platform for finding the latest information on labs and advisors of the four institutes of science and technology which will be helpful for students who are currently preparing their admission to the institutes and also for researchers looking for collaboration partners.”
